The article examines the essence and structure and provides an economic assessment of the natural resource potential of the region. Theoretical approaches to defining the category “natural resource potential of a region” are considered, taking into account system characteristics (certainty, sustainability, territorial isolation and self-recovery ability) and classification of resources according to the criteria of renewability, exhaustibility and economic use. Particular attention is paid to the principles of rational use of natural resource potential, including systematicity, complexity and minimization of environmental risks. Approaches to assessing natural resource potential, including cost, impact, rental and reproduction, as well as their advantages and limitations, have been studied. It has been revealed that the rent approach based on differential rent is the most effective for comparing resources, but requires supplementation with an analysis of synergistic effects. Recommendations are presented to improve the efficiency of using natural resource potential to stimulate regional economic growth, as well as reduce environmental risks.
