The article analyzes and discusses the essence and content of correctional work. Based on a study of the opinions of domestic and foreign scientists, as well as domestic legislation and international acts, the essence and content of criminal punishment in the form of correctional labor are considered. The study concluded that correctional work is a punishment imposed at the convict’s place of work or in other places determined by the sentencing authority, but at the convict’s place of residence for a certain period, while a certain percentage of the convict’s salary is paid to the state, also provides for a number of legal restrictions in relation to property and labor, mandatory participation in the performance of work at the place of activity, in other places and at the place of residence, related to the control of the convicted person and carrying out correctional work with him. The analysis shows that the essence of correctional labor is understood as the institution or nature of this punishment. The legislator does not fully disclose the content of criminal punishment in the form of correctional labor. Criminal legislation determines the subjects of punishment, the place of punishment and the period of correctional labor. Therefore, along with the general features of punishment, it does not determine the qualitative features of the content of correctional work, for example, when describing another alternative to punishment by imprisonment. Considering that the legislation does not establish the concept of “correctional work”, it needs to be analyzed in detail and given a specific and clear definition in criminal law.
